2012 - the new year and some baby news from us
Written by George Sunday, 15 January 2012 16:37
It is another new year, we are still trying to understand on how the year 2011 went so fast. And before you know it, it is 15 days into the first month and I am still trying to put the first news for the year. Usually we try to do a recap of the year, analyze how the year went and where we want to be the same time next year. This year we are still planning on doing it, but more towards in March/April. There is a specific reason for that, which we will get into in another couple of months. Here at the aviary the things have been quiet - The second clutch of Military Macaw babies went home - All three where DNA tested to be males and they were named Mo, Emmitt and Morgan by their new families. Morgan left yesterday. The third clutch babies are growing up and more alert every day and their pin feathers are coming out pretty nice. Other than that the Macaws have been really hunkering down for the winter which finally arrived with today's wake up temperature of negative 14!
The Congo Grey baby has been off the formula for the last week and should be ready to go home next week. His parents (Jake and Molly are sitting on some eggs, we are not sure if any are fertile - so crossing our fingers for that. Josephine and Jeremiah, hatched their first egg for us last week and they have been taking good care of the baby till now. We are hoping to pulling him for hand-feeding sometime next week depending on how Jodie's schedule is looking. The cameroons are working the box and almost chewed the side of the box big enough for them to come out - not sure if they are brave enough for that adventure, let's see what happens.
On a personal level, 2012 began with not the greatest of news with Jodie grandma in hospital from a fall/hip surgery - we are hoping that things will improve soon and we do appreciate a lot of yours prayers and thoughts on this. A personal Thank You to one and all from all of us.

Fall News - from the aviary
Written by George Sunday, 30 October 2011 16:06
It is late October and the leaves have finished their fall coloration and are now on their way down in preparation for the upcoming winter. We are very fortunate to have avoided the major early snow storm yesterday that came through the north east. We are an not complaining nor we are under any illusion about us and the fact that we will get plenty this year as usual. The birds the aviary are all doing wonderful - The babies are growing up quick and it is tough to keep up with them. Of the three Sun Conure babies, two are going home next weekend and the new parents are all excited to get their babies home.
Zazu - they African Grey Congo went home with Monica and Kurt this week where they are going to finish hand feeding him. We are still not sure about one of his legs, but regardless of that, he is in a very loving and caring environment. They made the long trip (5+ hrs) to get him and we are so thankful as we know he is in safe hands. Thank You Kurt and Monica.
African Grey Congo Babies

We seem to be in some sort of strange late season baby boom here at our aviary and we are not complaining one bit just because all our birdies totally forgot to go to nest this spring..lol. So we now have our first clutch of African Grey Congo Babies - they are from Jake and Molly and so far they are taken wonderful care of the two babies and it has been solid 2 weeks. Jodie will be pulling these babies to hand-feed any day now. I think she wants to co-ordinate with the eggs that are hatching in the incubator from our Military Macaws. Talking about them - they do not know how to feed the babies (trust us, we tried!) - so we pull them and they go back to nest. Last year they did it 2 times (3 clutches for the year) before we literally locked the box so she would not be able to go back in. This time we are trying a different approach. So after we pulled this clutch of 3 eggs last week (all good!) we gave couple of eggs from our B&G's which were not fertile so that she can complete her cycle and then sit some more. We are hoping that this will prevent her from going back into the egg laying mode soon. Honestly, we would love for her to stop with 2 clutches every year as all this egg laying and incubating is very physically demanding on both the male and female.
In other news from the aviary - we talked about the first clutch of eggs from our own babies that were paired up. We candled them and found that they were not any good. Mama is still sitting on the eggs, which is a good practice for when they get the act right :). Other than that we have to get ready for the weather to turn cold, which I am not looking forward to and I am sure Jodie is not either. We still have some babies left for sale - Macaws (Military), Grey (Congo) and Conures (Suns) are all available. So let us know if you are interested in any one of these wonderful babies.
News from our Aviary

Pretty exciting news from out Aviary - at least for us. About 2 years ago (2009) we had two pairs of sun conures and we decided to keep babies from these for our future breeding program. So after a lot of thought and DNA testing and everything we put two babies together. They were almost same age, and they grew up together. And after 2 years, they have their first clutch of eggs. We are not hoping to have babies, as we are sure they are not sure what they are doing. The male might not be mature enough to have babies yet but still it is pretty exciting when the babies we hand raised have grown up and started laying eggs. Even though they are hand raised, we have left them alone for the last year and half - so they are a hand shy but by no means they are vicious and attacking. They are still our babies and will continue to be our babies even after they have babies of their own.
In some other news from the Aviary, we have B&G's sitting on eggs, which we hope are good and fertile this time. Then we have our Military's, also sitting on 3 eggs - for this pair we just let them sit and do not check until it is time to pull the eggs to the incubator. We also have a new baby African Grey Congo - hatched this morning. Yay!!!
