Another Couple of Weeks of News
Written by George Monday, 05 October 2009 18:22
We have another couple of weeks of news to update you all - we have babies. All four eggs of Sunshine and Bubba hatched and we took the oldest two out for handfeeding as we do think it takes a lot out of the parents to feed them. We would rather have them concentrate on two babies and we worry about the others. So Jodie now has to get up every 2-3 hours and feed the little ones. In another week so she should be able to get some solid sleep as the babies grow up and sleep through the night. We are also very much ecstatic about Ray and Rita (our other pair of Suns) laying for the first time for us. They are a little strange, we are just getting to know their tendencies and behavior. First of all they took out all the nest bedding out of their nest box and the eggs are on wood bottom of the nest box resting against the side wall. Then, Rita laid the third egg from the perch to the bottom of the cage. All this has us wondering if we have a very young pair who is not sure what they are doing. It is not what we were told when you got this pair (as proven!), but we have come to realize that it means nothing in the breeder bird business.
Scarlet has gone back to nest and have one egg - we are crossing our fingers and hoping that we get a scarlet baby this time.
That's all for now and we hope to provide you with more good news soon.
Three Weeks of News
Written by George Thursday, 27 August 2009 19:00
That is correct, three weeks have gone by with no updates from us - that is very unlike of us. So without much ado - here is the scoop.
All the sun babies are weaned and already started to go home. Two went home yesterday, and in the coming days others also will be going to their new homes. The Blue Crown conure is also weaned now - and will be going home next week. Actually the Blue Crown baby has started to talk and has now mastered the word 'hello' - it is pretty exciting. That leaves us with 'Basil' and as you can see on our front page - he/she is growing up quick. Basil will be going to live with Kurt and Monica when weaned. We know they will love and spoil this baby and is a perfect fit.
In other news, our Scarlets are already sitting on 3 eggs. Being this soon after the move we expect the eggs to be clear, but we are happy that they are settling down. We also have couple of eggs from our Blue and Gold breeders (Sarge and Gypsy) and Sunshine is walking around with a torpedo butt (getting ready to lay any day!).
The summer is coming to an end and no one is more happier than Jodie - as the kids will be going to school soon :)
Welcoming Scarlet and Frankie
Written by George Friday, 31 July 2009 19:00
So one big news, this one just happened so quick but we are excited about it. Today we added a pair of Scarlet Macaws to our Aviary. Meet Scarlet and Frankie - They are absolutely gorgeous and are slowly settling in. We have some pictures of them on the front page of the site.
We got them from PA and it was a nice and long drive for me to go get them. I started yesterday evening and got back with them by today afternoon. Jodie was at home taking care (hand-feeding) the babies and also setting up their cage. By the time we were back it was all ready for them. They got a wonderful shower of mist and they seemed to eat the veggies good too in addition to the pellets.
We are hoping that they settle down and breed for us. Crossing fingers and hoping for it to be soon.
Update on the Baby Blue Crown with Splayed Leg
Written by Jodie Sunday, 26 July 2009 19:00
The baby Blue Crown is responding well to the therapy. After having his legs tied for 2 days he can now bend the leg at the joint where the foot and the leg come together. Now we are working on the joint where the leg meets the body. What I have done is made a make-do sling using the tape that sticks to itself and not the skin. I have him suspended from my banana holder. He is hanging just so that his legs touch the bottom of the incubator. He feels the bottom and moves his legs to try to stand. This is exercising his little muscles and joints. Again, this is one of the worst cases that I have ever seen being that his legs ran in the North and South position. Anything I have ever seen has been in the East and West position. So this is actually a new learning experience for me as well. We are keeping our fingers crossed that this little guy recovers completely and will keep the updates coming with his progress.
Pulled Joe and Sasta's Baby for Handfeeding (Blue Crown)
Written by Jodie Friday, 24 July 2009 19:00
Well, yesterday we pulled the baby Blue Crown Conure for handfeeding. It was very difficult to get the dedicated mom to leave the nest so I could pull the baby. It was a little disappointing once I brought the baby into the nursery and was able to examine him/her more thoroughly. The poor little guy is suffering from an extreme case of Splayed Leg. I have tied his little legs and positioned him in a small bowl with towels all the way around to keep him from falling over. He certainly doesn't like it, but it's something that must be done if he/she ever has a chance to live a normal life. We are just praying at this point that his legs will return to normal and he/she will be able to be a normal bird as far as being able to walk. I dealt with this situation many times when I had my pet shop. At that time I only bred small birds and all my large birds were purchased from local breeders. Almost all of the umbrella cockatoos that I received from my breeder had splayed leg, and I was always able to correct the problem. For those of you who don't know.....splayed leg can be caused by a number of different things. Being that Shasta is such a devoted mom and never left the nest box, we believe that by her sitting on the baby constantly is what contributed the most to his condition. Only time will tell at this point weather or not he recovers completely. It is a very extreme case and if for some reason he doesn't recover completely with the therapy and all that we will give then he will be a special needs bird. He will still have the opportunity to live a full and happy life weather it be with a caring and compassionate customer, or with us here at the aviary. We will definately keep you updated on his/her progress. We will all keep our fingers crossed that everything turns out for the best.
