Sammy Laying Eggs
Written by Jodie Monday, 08 June 2009 19:00
Well Sammy has taken us all by surprise as she has laid 5 eggs!! She is a good little mama as she sets tight on those eggs regardless of what is going on. Of course its driving Rocket crazy. He keeps getting down and going to see her behind the couch. He wants to feed her and have physical contact with her so bad, but she just won't have it right now as she is protecting her eggs. She won't let him enter the nest area, but she does come to the opening of her nest area and they do a little bit of talking and showing off for each other. We will probably let her set on them for about another week before we remove the eggs. Then hopefully, the two of them can get to know each other and we'll see what happens.

Lots of News to share

Lots of news to share from the aviary. We have been a little busy and did not have time to update the news here and before we know there is lots of news to update everyone. So here we go with the latest edition of news from the aviary.
As you can see from the front page of our website, we have 'Rocket' and eventually we are hoping that he and 'Sammy' would pair up and provide us with some baby Blue and Golds. But we are in no hurry with that one, but 'Sammy' is sitting on 3 eggs in her makeshift nest area behind our living room couch lined with comfy pink blankets.
The two Sun Conure babies are growing up quick and they are getting ready to fledge, or so it seems with the furious and determined flapping of the wings. Their feathers are all coming in real nice. We are giving it another week or two before they fledge and start eating a little bit of soft foods. They should be ready to go to their new homes in a month or so.
We have another set of Sun Conure eggs (5 in all) which will start hatching in another week or so. So we are all excited about them while keeping our fingers crossed - hoping for the best. Molly (our Harleuquin) is on 2 eggs now and we really really hope that we get some babies this time. The younger pair of Blue Crown conures also has an egg. Both our Blue Crowns laid a clear clutch last time - so we are hoping that this time we will have some good eggs that will hatch.
I am thinking that this is a lot of news for one update, so we will try to do this on a more regular basis. Take care and thanks.
Sammy is a Girl !!!
Written by Jodie Monday, 25 May 2009 19:00
Ok, we have had the suspicion that Sam is a girl. Today our suspicions were proved correct. Sam layed her very first egg ever!! The poor Girl......she really wasn't sure what happened. She has been spending an awful lot of time behind the couch the last couple of days. As soon as I put her on her play stand she crawls down and away she goes. Usually when we eat dinner she sets on my shoulder and shares the food on my plate. Tonite was very different. She got down off her stand and I thought she was coming up to eat with me, but she didn't. She ran behind the couch. I actually kind of forgot she was there and when I went looking for her there she was. I reached down to pick her up and there it was....... her first egg. I gave her a blanket and am going to let her keep the egg for a while. Right now she is back on her playstand and resting. Very Confused!!
Sam - being a girl
Written by George Sunday, 17 May 2009 19:00
Couple of months ago, we adopted a Blue and Gold Macaw - Sam. He was one of the first babies Jodie hand-fed when she had the store and when he was up for adoption (well, for sale at a near by pet store!), we decided that it was time to give him a permanent home with us. At that time we thought if Cammy (our Catalina who has been laying eggs!) and Sam liked each other, then they could share a cage and play together and all. Of course, that would not be the case. They both tolerate each other and accept, but they are far from being the best buddies.
Now fast forward couple of months, and now we are almost certain that Sam is really short for Samantha. She is displaying classic signs of being a girl and we believe shortly we could see the first egg from her. Laying eggs (from our pet birds) is not really the favorite things around here, but we realize that it is the natural behavior. Sam has also taught herself to get down from her play stand and go exploring the house. Se goes upstairs playing chasing the cats, she plays with Abbey downstairs, chews on the photographs Jodie has stores behind the couches, and most of all she will not let Jodie lie down on the couch. So all in all she is having fun!
Now it is just up to us, to make the transition from calling him 'good boy' to 'good girl'!
