Website Usability and other tweaks
Written by George Thursday, 02 April 2009 19:00
This site has been up for a couple of months now and we have constantly tried to upgrade and update the contents and usability of the site so that all the users of this site can benefit. We started with a simple design and some static content, some pictures and then some videos. Then we came to the realization that as we start adding stuff to the site, this method is not ideal from the stand point of maintaining the content and making sure that we do not have any wrong or outdated information on the site. So we silently converted the static website to a content management system. We kept the same design in the front end, so the users did not have to see any change. We think that change was a big success for it met its goal of simplifying the management of content. It is simple, straightforward and organized.
Now we move to the next phase of tweaking - how to improve little things on the website to make a difference to the user. One of the pages that has a lot of visitors is the 'Availability' page. This page list what birds are available at any point of time. This is time sensitive data, but no where on the page does it say when it was updated last. So we added a small statement on top of the page saying something like 'This Information is current as of Month Year'. This should provide the user with the comfort that the information is current and they are not getting misled by some information which is an year old. Please do check the 'Availability' page and see for yourself. These are the kind of tweaks that I want to make to the site to make it more user friendly. Stay tuned for more of these kind if tweaks, or if you have any suggestions on how we can improve, then please do let us know by contacting us.
New homes for the babiesNew homes for the babies
Written by George Saturday, 28 March 2009 19:00
Congrats to Chris and Erin Campolo, Erica Tempchin and Kurt and Monica Nagahiro for their new babies. All three babies went to their new home yesterday to start the next chapter of their wonderful life. We hope we have provided them with a good head start, with socialization and introduction to different things and foods and sounds and sights. We hope all that will help them cope with new things they will encounter in future. We also hope that we taught them how to love and trust their human companions. Good Luck and Congrats to all - we will post any updates from each of the babies. So now we have Skittles with us for the next couple of weeks when his parents will be here to pick him up. Last night he was not sure about what happened to all his brothers and sisters and maybe he was a little lonely.
On other news, Sunshine and Bubba has an egg. So we are hoping that soon we will have more babies to love and play with.
All ready for new homes

All the babies from our first clutch (Sun Conures) are ready to go home. This is actually a bitter sweet thing for all of us here at CNY Aviary. The babies are so cute and cuddly and there is nothing in them to not like them and we all love them. They love to play, they love to be with you and do all sorts of acrobatic clownish things that keeps you entertained. It is great that they are going to their for ever homes to be with their family, but it is still going to leave a little bit of void when they are gone. We have already told the parents (Sun Conures) and they might be sensing our sadness and are getting ready to lay again (hopefully!).
We have seen these babies grow up from small minuscule bundles of furry balls to big birds (still babies). We seen them fly for the first time (of course very clumsily!) and we have seen them pick on the millet for the for the first time and start eating real food. We have gone through a lot with these guys in the last 8 to 10 weeks. Yesterday Jodie was vacuuming the living room and the babies decided to take a bath in the water dish. And oh my - what a sight was it. All four of them drenched like there is no tomorrow. They were soaking wet and they were enjoying it. We dried them off a little and they basked in the sunlight preening the feathers - it is a joyful sight. This weekend, the babies will start going to their homes and we will keep everyone posted as to how they are doing.
Cammy comes home
Written by George Saturday, 14 March 2009 19:00
Cammy is the latest addition to our home. She is going to be our pet and she is a beautiful 'Catalina' Macaw. We (Jodie and Me) took a drive down to Mary D, PA yesterday to bring her home. She comes from the home of Tammy and her mom. She is about 8 years old and she is such a sweet girl. We will be updating our photo albums with her pictures, so look out for them.
Site updates and move to the new Server
Written by George Saturday, 07 March 2009 19:00
The site (cnyaviary.com) is finally on a new server and has been completely changed. The earlier site was a static site with just pages added on by me as time went, but Jodie really like the overall design of the site. The new site is the same design as the old one, but with an all new engine driving everything in the background.
So the move was challenging, as we had to find something that was extensible and easy to maintain at the same time I had strict orders to keep everything the same. So that is why you may not notice a lot of difference in the overall layout of the site, but underneath it all - everything changed. Now we use a CMS (Content Management System) called SilverStripe to manage the whole site. The photo gallery and the video gallery has been tweaked and modified a bit. The news area is also changed a little bit, but everything remains the same. Soon we will have more features added. So look out for them and also lookout for the new baby announcements on the first page.
