The First Flight

Written by George Sunday, 01 March 2009 19:00

The first flight is always special and scary. That is exactly what we had today. The first baby of the 2009 clutch (Skittles) fledged today and it was memorable. We kind of knew that he was ready to fly, by the way he has been flapping his wings in the cage and also by his acrobatics in the cage. So today after work I came home and held the baby on the couch and Jodie stood halfway across the room calling for the baby. After a lot of hesitation, he took off after a quick dumping of excess weight on me... wohoo. Jodie caught the baby in mid flight before he could crash against any walls, thus averting anything harmful. So one down, three more to go in this clutch. Oh, what joy is to see your babies fly.

New additions

We added a Sun Conure pair (Ray and Rita) over the weekend. These are two truly stunning birds, both raised by their first breeder about 7 years ago from babies. They have really stunning colors and I had a chance to see one of their babies from April 2008 clutch and was really impressed with the amount of orange color on the baby. So now they are home and will join 'Sunshine and Bubba' our resident Sun Conure pair in the aviary. We also added two pairs of 'Blue Crown Conures' to our aviary.

This is a new species for us in the aviary, so we are really excited to see how this turns out. After reading about the 'Blue Crowns', we feel that we are going to enjoy them for a long time. The pairs we got are 'Joe and Sashta' and 'Otter and Seaweed' - They are still unsure of the move and the new surroundings, but have started to enjoy the fresh foods we offer at the aviary.  We made a trip down to Mary D in PA to get these birds from Tammy - and we do have to thank her for the nice birds and all he help in answering questions about everything. Please look for some pictures on the front page and our picture gallery in the next day or two to see the new birds. If you are interested in any of these birds and want to know more, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Update on the babies

Written by George Thursday, 19 February 2009 19:00

We have found wonderful homes for all our 4 babies from this clutch of Sun Conure babies. All the babies are growing up so quick that they have out grown the brooder and have their own cage now. The older two have started to perch a little and also pick at the millet spray hanging in the cage along with some toys. They also have access to a dish a Zupreem pellets (cockatiel size) so that they can pick at them too if they so please. It is only now their personalities are coming out and we are starting to play with them a little bit.  We have taken down the nest box for the Suns and also the Green-Wing Macaws to give them a break from breeding. This is absolutely necessary for the health of the birds and also to make sure we have a sound breeding program with good healthy babies. We are keeping our eyes open for another pair of Sun Conures and we might have some news about a new pair pretty soon.

Babies growing up fast!

Written by George Saturday, 07 February 2009 19:00

We now have all four of the babies upstairs with us and they are being hand-fed by Jodie every 3 to 4 hours. Even though it is a very taxing to get up every 3 hours to feed the babies, she enjoys doing it. Of the four babies we have deposits for two of them already and we are hoping that soon we will be able to find good homes for the other two too. This week we are also planning on putting some privacy screens between the macaws, for the B&G and the Harlequins seems to be too close. I have deviced my own technique of curtains with PVC pipe, end caps and eye hooks with Jodie stitching some sheets up as curtains. After the installation I will put couple of pictures up - just for the sake of sharing. It is February and that can only mean one thing - it is cold and snowy. We were blessed with a great weekend - 46 and 40 and tonight it is supposed to go back to the teens, which is the normal temp here in Central NY during this time of the year.

Hand-feeding Babies and a start to Video Clips

Written by George Thursday, 22 January 2009 19:00

Yesterday, Jodie pulled two of the four Sun Conure babies for hand-feeding and they are slowly learning to bob their heads and enjoy the warmth of the formula. In trying to get some pictures, Jodie recorded a short video clip of the babies and I decided to upload to our site, so that everyone can see the cute babies. At this time, they are on the front page of our site, I am seriously considering adding a Video Archive page where visitors can view all of them.
